Testing Red Light for better skin: Baby Quasar Pure Rayz

Today’s post about red light actually begins with a story about NASA, which I assure you is a first on this blog. In the 70’s and 80’s, NASA observed that gravity slowed everything down in space, including healing in astronauts. Gravity is a bummer y’all. NASA found that red light not only sped up the healing process in astronauts, accelerating the growth of healthy skin cells by 150-200%, but it could also be used to grow plants! Holla at cha girl, SCIENCE!

Red light stimulates the skin to produce collagen and elastin, both things we naturally lose as we get older because #lame. Red light therapy has also been used on cancer patients, helping reduce inflammation, increase circulation and lymph system activity.

Baby Quasar now makes a Pure Rayz device that is double sided, combining both red and blue light. The red light only device doesn’t appear to be available any longer. That is what I am reviewing in this post.

The first time I experienced red light therapy for myself was actually at a day spa called Spa Castle in Dallas, Texas. I was intrigued by the lawn chairs under a bright red “sun” so I put on my sunglasses and soaked in the cherry red light, not quite knowing what it did, but assuming it was good. I was correct. Red light therapy is FDA-approved, safe and a non-invasive anti-ager. My main goal is preventative anti-aging.

What is Baby Quasar?

Baby Quasar has been harnessing red light technology for the last 15 years. Their devices started out as a spa-only tool, where you can expect to pay $300/month for treatment. It’s a family owned and operated company that offers devices for the spa professional but also the average beauty consumer like you and me!

They recently unveiled the most cost effective solution to this type of technology yet, Pure Rayz. I was given the opportunity to try this cool device and I’ve been looking forward to sharing my thoughts with you! I am trying out the red light device for anti-aging but they do have a blue light device for acne as well.

The Pure Rayz device differs from Baby Quasar’s original tools in a few ways. Most notably, the $199 price tag is their most affordable option yet. It is made of plastic, vs. anodized aluminum and offers a 5 year warranty vs. the lifetime warranty of their other tools. This one still offers the 90 day money back guarantee and actually has the largest treatment surface area of all the Baby Quasar devices.

Pure Rayz uses 4 wavelengths of light-red, super red, amber, and infrared light to not only encourage your skin to produce collagen and elastin but also softens sebum and decreases pore size. It has a built-in 3 minute timer and is powered by a 6 foot cord.

For those that are bummed it’s not battery operated; here’s the skinny. You are holding a truly powerful device as batteries cannot generate the amount of power needed to push the wavelengths of light through the layers of skin. This can only be accomplished via wall plugin.

Cool Science Facts

  • This is the only technology available that penetrates skin for long lasting collagen production.
  • Red and infrared light are present in sunlight, however, sunlight contains the full electromagnetic spectrum including x-rays, gamma and UV rays that are harmful.
  • Best of all, red light stimulates fibroblasts deep in the skin to build collagen over 8 weeks. Consistency is key.

My Skin

I am 32, have never tried injectables or surgical procedures and plan to keep it that way. I have fine expression lines on my forehead, the “11 lines” between my brows and melasma on my forehead and cheekbones. My skin is dry and I rarely, if ever, break out.

How to use Baby Quasar Pure Rayz

  1. First, cleanse your skin. You don’t want any makeup or pollution on the surface of your skin as it will inhibit absorption of light.
  2. You may exfoliate now if you typically do so. Built up dead skin cells can also interfere with the absorption of red light.
  3. Now, it’s time to bust out our Baby Quasar Pure Rayz! Plug it in, put on the included googles if you want or just close your eyes, and push the on button once. You will press the device lightly onto the skin, moving it in small circular motions. They recommend using the device for 3 minutes on each area of the face. I like to do 3 minutes on each side of the face and then an extra 3 concentrating on my forehead and neck. The device will shut off after each 3 minute interval.
  4. At this point, you can apply any serums or moisturizers as you usually do. It’s important not to apply these beforehand as they can inhibit penetration of the light wavelengths.

It is recommended to use your device 5 times a week for 8 weeks initially, then 1-2 times per week after that for maintenance. I had a hard time sticking to the schedule as I did it at night when I was ready to enter dreamland STAT but it soon became an enjoyable bed time ritual. It doesn’t hurt, it feels scientific and allows you some time to space out and clear your mind.

Feel free to use this on the lip area, which is awesome because that is an area that loses collagen as we age for sure.

My results

After using the Baby Quasar Pure Rayz for 3 months now, and reviewing photos I took before beginning treatment, here are my findings:

  • Fine lines are softer
  • My skin looks firmer and lifted and just overall, really good
  • The melasma on the center of my forehead has broken up and disappeared. I’m not sure if this is because I’ve been in the sun less but it’s definitely reduced if not all gone. The melasma on the very top of my forehead is still there but lighter.
  • Breakouts are very very rare, if ever.
  • My skin is just in a really good place. This could be due to Pure Rayz but also due to my use of retinol and facial oils but I’ve done that for years.
  • I never use the gold butterfly or flower crown Snapchat filter.

Do I recommend it?

Yes. I believe in the science behind red light therapy. I feel good about using this device and will continue to do so weekly to stay forever 32. I know that I’m using the most powerful red light therapy on the market and that it’s safe.
