Holographic Makeup Look

One of the most prevalent beauty trends I’ve been seeing lately is holographic makeup. Sometimes called mermaid, holo or unicorn makeup, it’s light-bending, pastel rainbow effect can be a little intimidating for us 30+ crowd. There are a few ways you can subtly incorporate holographic makeup into you look without feeling like a baby disco princess. Feel free to go full-on hologram too though.🦄🌈

I recently got to collaborate with one of my favorite photographers on this ethereal, iridescent, holographic look. I drew inspiration from the Urban Decay Distortion palette itself, with it’s shattered fractal-like packaging and top row of holographic shades meant to transform and alter the shade they are applied on top of. I primarily used that palette to create the the model’s look.

This photo shows how we took the look up a notch, making it a bit more evening, or as I call it, iridescent Elizabethan realness.
I added black liner to the top lashline and waterline, added depth to the crease and outer corner of the eye with deeper purple and applied a mid tone pink lip.

5 WAYS TO WEAR HOLOGRAPHIC MAKEUP

  1. Softly applied cheekbone highlight.
  2. Sheer wash of color on lid, bare or on top of another color
  3. Inner eye corner highlight
  4. Above the cupid’s bow and dusted onto center of bottom lip
  5. As a blush topper for slight sheen. Make sure to use a similar toned highlight to the blush color.

The Urban Decay Distortion palette contains 9 shimmer colors, 1 matte black and the top row of transformer shades, meant to layer on top of the others. The first time I saw this done was the Kat Von D Alchemist palette so if you have that, it would work just as well for this look.

The Distortion palette is arranged so that you could use trios of colors in a straight line down, so Bleach, First Offense and Territorial, for example. Smart, but I never a.) notice those things or b.) follow rules.

The e.l.f. Stardust Glitter Eyeliner in Pink Opal and Sea Foam made for perfect, inner corner highlights. They really do have a pearlescent quality to them. The name is a tad confusing though as they are not actually glitter liners, rather just shimmer.

While I didn’t use the following products, they would also make great forays into unicorn world. Clearly, Urban Decay can’t help themselves and are all about that #HoloLife, recently launching Disco Queen Holographic Highlight Powder and Holographic Disco Stick. I found both formulas a little lacking, to be honest.

e.l.f. Prismatic Highlighting Duos are a budget friendly way to wear holographic makeup and they surprised me with their subtlety and wearbility. Wet n’ Wild also just released a Goth-o-Graphic limited edition collection of holographic makeup so the options are endless and the prices are right!

So hey.

Do you like these types of posts? I do makeup 6-7 days of week but don’t share any of that work here. Let me know if you enjoy look breakdowns and I’d be happy to share more of that part of my life! Thanks for reading this one!

Make sure to use a similar toned highlight to the blush color. That the key to holographic makeup look.
