Of all the beauty-related questions I get asked, the topic I get asked about most is definitely lashes.
How can you grow lashes?
Are your lashes real?
What are the best mascaras for long lashes?
Do lash growth serums work?
Genetics help of course, but there are several products, treatments and steps you can take to grow lashes that are longer and healthier than before. This method is exactly what I’ve done and my lashes are living their absolute best life.
My Proven Formula to Grow Lashes
- Lash lift and tint
- Treat gently
The first step to grow lashes, is well, to grow them! You can accomplish this with the aid of lash grow serums. I am sharing the one I’ve had amazing results with. While I have makeup clients that use others, I’ve only tried this and RapidLash, which I hated.
GrandeLash-MD Lash Enhancing Serum has been an absolute game-changer for me. Commit to 3 months of nightly use and you’ll be pleasantly surprised/amazed with your own natural lashes.
FYI: If you are pregnant or breastfeeding, you shouldn’t use this serum.
Your cheapest and pregnancy safe solution to lash growth and strengthening is castor oil. I suggest using spoolies or a tiny eyeliner brush to apply to the lashes. Because this is a thick and sticky oil, I would do this right before bed. A teeny tiny bit goes a long way too. It will just be much slower going.
I recommend decanting your castor oil into these refillable mascara tubes available on Amazon.
If your existing lashes are damaged, broken, or brittle, either from improperly applied lash extensions, improperly done lash lifts or overuse of drying mascaras and cleansers, you may need to condition them in addition to growing them.
GrandeRepair is a lash conditioner that can be easily applied, just as you would mascara. I recommend doing this at night, or when you don’t plan on wearing mascara.
You can also use castor oil for conditioning.
LASH LIFT + TINT
Aside from using a lash growth serum, lash lift and tints have made the biggest difference in my lashes. If your lashes have a decent amount of length, with no significant gaps, lifting and tinting will make them look as long as possible, and by separating them, as if you have way more of them.
There is no maintenance with this service as there is with lash extensions. Because they are your lashes, there are no fills, but you will want to treat them nicely if you want them to stay curled the longest.
You might assume a treatment like this would be damaging to your lashes, but I’ve had it done 11-12 times now and I actually feel like my lashes are healthier. I rarely lose lashes anymore.
Your lashes will stay the most healthy, and your lash lift and tints will last the longest, when you don’t put additional pressure or tension on them. A traditional flat sleep mask will smash your lashes so you’ll want to get one like the Manta Sleep Mask.
If there is one thing I consider a strength of mine it’s that I sleep on my back. It’s one of the few things I can do well, you guys. It happens to be an ideal position for keeping lashes healthy and un-squished too.
PROPER MAKEUP REMOVAL
If you habitually sleep in mascara and eye makeup, your lashes will not be better for it. In fact, you’ll dry them out, causing them to break and even fall out over time. Imagine your lashes falling out every time you consider snoozing before makeup removal.
To remove eye makeup, you can use a micellar water on a cotton pad, I like Embryolisse Micellaire Lotion or my preferred method, an oil or balm cleanser, removed with a warm washcloth, like the MakeUp Eraser.
BEST LENGTHENING MASCARAS
Once you grow your lashes, lift them up and treat them nicely, you can really make the most of them with a lengthening mascara. Here a few of my favorites:
Essence Lash Princess is the cheapest route to lashes that will make people ask if they’re real.
Hourglass Caution Extreme is pretty, pricy and what I pull out when I need my lashes to look their very biggest, baddest, thickest and longest.
If you want length that lasts without smudging, a tubing formula like Kevyn Aucoin’s The Volume is where it’s at.
The playlist below includes 5 videos I’ve made about lashes and lash lifts.
- Those that are pregnant or breastfeeding, should not use GrandeLash.
- If you get lash lifts, avoid oil-based makeup removers as they can weigh down the curl.
- When you have a lash lift, you will also want to avoid castor oil as it also weighs down the curl.
- If you use an eyelash curler, reserve it for special events as repeated use can put unnecessary tension on the lash. No one is cleaning their curler often enough either!

I hope that you’re now feeling excited about the long lashes you’re about to grow. When people ask if my lashes are real, which they often do, it’s fun to be able to say “yes, I grew them myself!”
