Skincare Sunday-Konjac Sponges

Welcome to another installment of Skincare Sunday! I definitely hear that yelled in the monster truck voice: SUNDAY, SUNDAY, SUNDAY!

Have you heard of konjac sponges? They’re kind of hot right now. Konjac, pronounced con-jack. Though I always just say it like cognac and then I can’t help but think of the Dave Chapelle Show skit “and a banana cognac..” I think this is the second time I’ve referenced the Chapelle Show on my beauty blog. Well what can I say–I appreciate the finer things in life. These strange little sponges are made from the fibrous roots of a vitamin-rich plant grown in eastern Asia. Some eat the konjac root. I prefer it on mah face. Let me tell you a little more!

The Dr. Sponge brand in particular totes a laundry list of good: recyclable, sustainable, cruelty-free, biodegradable, allergen free, preservative free and fair trade. They sent me the aloe vera-infused sponge to try because I shared with them how dry my skin is. I also received the original body sponge. There are several other types of sponge too. The charcoal and the pearl ones sound intriguing! They are $8.50 each for the smaller sponges, $11.50 for the larger body sponges.

Directions
The sponge starts out hard, like most traditional sponges. Get it really well-hydrated and you will feel it soften to an almost jelly-like texture. It will feel very soft and non-abrasive. You may use cleansers with it or use alone on face and/or body.

Uses

  • Alternative to wash cloths. They are much gentler, especially around the eye are, and easier to clean.
  • To wipe face after using a mask or peel
  • Loofah alternative. If you’re a mama, these are soft enough to use on ya babies.
  • Makeup removing wipe alternative. I was surprised at how gentle the facial cleansing sponge was on my eyes. It’s more soothing and less wasteful than using a makeup wipe for sure.
  • More economical/less wasteful cotton round alternative. Hydrate the sponge well and then use with your toner or makeup remover solution.
  • Clarisonic alternative. If you have very sensitive skin, or a wallet that’s just not ready for that Clarisonic life, this is a very gentle way to exfoliate daily without the $150+ investment. $8.50 actually. Little nicer, huh?

Additional Thoughts

  • I was very relieved that the sponges have zero scent. For some reason, being that it’s plant-based, I suspected it would be scented in some way. Luckily, it was not.
  • I like the little string to hang on your faucet to dry. Handy dandy.
  • Boscia put out a konjac sponge last year at Sephora and it retails for $18.00. I see little reason to pay just shy of 2o bones when these are the identical material with all the same benefits.
  • I was very surprised at how soft and exfoliated my skin felt from something so gentle. Even if you scrubbed overzealously, I still don’t think you could cause any redness or irritation.

Where can I buy them?

Beyond the Dr. Sponge site, there are several retailers, the most common ones being Amazon and Anthropologie.
