Having used the previous Ethereal Eyes palette, a trusty wedding workhorse in my freelance kit, I was familiar with the formulas. It’s predecessor was a different color palette, leaning more pink and warm, so very versatile and wearable.

The Ethereal Eyes Moonlight palette retails for $68. It includes 12 full size shadows in 4 different textures: matte, satin, shimmer and glitter top coats.

PIGMENTATION

I wouldn’t categorize these as heavily pigmented, but that’s something I’ve enjoyed about Makeup By Mario shadows in the past. It makes them easy to work with and build. The glitter top coats are lacking in pigment, and intentionally so. They leave behind a multi dimensional sparkle, meant to be used on top of other colors.

FORMULA

The mattes are quite silky and apply smoothly. The shadows definitely have more fallout/kick up than the Master Mattes palette. It’s nothing bothersome but make sure to tap your brush off before applying.

The glitter topcoats are initially soft and dry, and when applied with your finger, over time, oils will build up. I actually prefer the texture after several uses.

WEAR

I primed my eyes with the Makeup By Mario Eye Prep & Set and found the wear time to be pretty average. The glitter top coats are going to flake off later in the day so make sure you don’t skip a shadow primer. Setting spray also helps if you mist a bit over the final eye look.

PRICE

The packaging feels good quality and I really like the large mirror. I think $68 feels relatively on par for the current eyeshadow palette landscape. The shadows are large pan sizes and the glitter top coats are still a somewhat unique formula.

What I liked

The mattes are smooth applying. The glitter top coats are super pretty and offer instant wow factor in one quick swipe. I was pleasantly surprised to find many shades leaning more neutral, even slightly golden. I initially assumed this was an entirely cool tone palette.

WHAT I DIDN’T

The color range just isn’t for me. The top coats are my favorites but I wouldn’t wear those everyday and many of the other colors are just too ashy on me.

WHO WOULD LOVE IT

If you are over the warm, bronzey, sunset tones. If you don’t gravitate to the pinky Pillowtalk vibes either. If instead, you are craving a return to 90’s era cool tone vibes, you’ll find nostalgia and intrigue within the Makeup By Mario Ethereal Eyes Moonlight Palette. If you’ve been wanting a palette for nights out, i.e. girls night and New Years Eve, you’ll have fun with Ethereal Eyes Moonlight.

WHO WON’T LOVE IT

If like me, you have grey-ish blue or green eyes, you’ll find several of the shades difficult to wear. The cooler tone shades, specifically the grays and taupes, flatter warm eyes far more easily. There’s just not enough complimentary color contrast on cool tone eyes, therefore, the effect is more tired, bruised and sickly on me.

WOULD I REPURCHASE?

I did not purchase this, but if I were to lose this palette, I would not repurchase it myself. For $68, it just doesn’t have enough flattering shades for my personal coloring/taste. However, the quality is there and I’ve yet to be truly disappointed with any Makeup By Mario product. This one isn’t for me, but I know it’s for someone.
