LipSense review

The past few months, I’ve been getting asked the following questions…a lot.

Have you heard of LipSense?
Have you tried LipSense?
Do you want to try LipSense?

I really like having a point of view on as many beauty products as possible, especially ones that my readers/friends appear to have a distinct curiosity about. My good friend, and fellow MUA Melissa recently starting selling LipSense so this was the perfect time for me to try it. I purchased the $55 starter kit from her, choosing the purple berry shade Lexie Beary. I read the instructions very carefully and set about trying this creepily long-lasting lip product that I can’t stop seeing all over my Facebook feed. So, does it really work? Does it dry out your lips? Would I buy it again? Read on.

The starter kit contains the lip color, gloss and remover. Once you have those, you can purchase additional lip colors and the different glosses. You’d be hard pressed not to find a color you like as there are 70 in a variety of finishes as well as 10 different glosses that range from matte, glossy, iridescent, glitter! I want to say that I don’t care about the glitter gloss but I definitely do.

Application
Ok, so the key to applying LipSense is to apply 3 thin layers, letting each one dry in between. I tried doing just 2 layers one day and it was apparent that 3 is the magic number. Upon first application, you may feel some burning. The product does contain cosmetic grade alcohol which can sting a bit and feel cold as it evaporates. Oddly enough, it doesn’t feel like you’re drying your lips out, but just a slight tingle. I noticed that the sensation was not as noticeable the second day I applied it.

After your 3 coats dry, you will apply your gloss of choice. This is what makes your lips feel moisturized and gives them that juicy look as seen below. The gloss is a must. With the gloss, there is no dry, matte feel. When I applied the gloss for the first time, I was totally blown away to see not a speck of deep purple on the lip gloss doe foot applicator.

Pigment 9/10 The lip color formula is thin so if you don’t apply 3 coats, it could look streaky. I’m told the different colors can vary in opacity too.

Texture/Formula 8/10 Some could find the burning sensation uncomfortable and the scent unpleasant. I wasn’t extremely bothered by either. Without the gloss, the lip color feels dry, but still not as dry as I thought it would.

Wear 10/10 This is obviously the most impressive attribute of LipSense. It lasted through iced coffees, burritos, kisses on kitties, kisses on babies, vigorous rubbing, blowing my nose.

Value 9/10 The initial investment of $55 might seem steep but once you have gloss, you can purchase additional colors for $25. That may still sound steep but considering you literally apply once per day, it’s pretty economical.

Here’s a 1 minute Snapchat compilation of the first day I tried it. I’m ivysavanah on there btw.
Criticisms
  • I don’t enjoy the scent of the lip color, like a fruity alcoholic drink. However, the glosses are unscented and the remover smells pleasant, like vanilla.
  • Removal isn’t fun since it’s so long-wearing. The Oops Remover really isn’t necessary. Glycerin soap and a wash cloth worked best for me but you might get a bit of soap in your mouth.
  • The packaging is hella dated. The products are gaining in popularity so a rebrand is long overdue.

Do I recommend LipSense?
I do. There is no doubt that it works. It’s obviously made by witches because I have never tried a lip product as long lasting. As long as you reapply the gloss, it doesn’t feel dry or crack. I like it enough to want more colors, which I do. I like that it’s vegan, lead-free and cruelty free.

I know some have experienced an exfoliation process but I’ve yet to. I won’t wear LipSense everyday simply because I do enjoy the feel of regular lipstick and actually enjoy reapplying! I will reach for it on days I’m doing makeup morning ’til night and have no time to even look at myself in the mirror, much less reapply lips.

Hit up Melissa (distributor ID#269484) if you want your LipSense fix, and customized shade recommendations from an experienced makeup artist. Request to be added to her Facebook group to purchase and watch her awesome live videos.

The scent is not for everyone ☺️ It’s actually citronellol 🍋 and limonene 🍊 extracts that contribute to the scent.
