Uses and Benefits of Argan Oil

Maybe you’ve heard of Argan oil, sometimes known as Moroccan oil. So what does it do? Is it for hair? Skin? Do you put it on a salad? Well…I shall tell you!

Argan oil is a multi-purpose product that has a variety of uses and benefits. It is extracted from the kernels of the Argan tree in Morocco. The process of extraction is time consuming and labor-intensive and is still done by hand.
It takes about 12 – 20 hours of hand processing to produce one liter of Argan oil. This is what makes it expensive, but you will get your money’s worth due to it’s multiple uses:

Hair
Argan oil can be used on the hair to repair split ends, tame frizz and moisturize. It can be used as a leave-in conditioner or overnight treatment for extra dry hair.

Skin
Because it contains 80% omega fatty acids and a high concentration of vitamin E, it makes a great facial moisturizer for severely dry or aging skin and skin conditions like eczema, psorasis and acne-prone skin. It has also been used to prevent and treat stretch marks, scarring and burns. Try using it as you would a serum, applying before your regular night cream or mix a few drops into your regular facial moisturizer. I used Argan oil on my nose while I had a cold and was blowing my nose constantly.

Nails
Argan oil makes for a great cuticle oil and helps to repair dry cracked fingertips in these winter months. I add a few drops to my hand cream before I go to bed.

Lips
You can apply to your lips as a gloss or create a lip scrub by adding a few drops of Argan oil to fine brown sugar.

Body
A few drops of Argan oil can be mixed with your regular moisturizer or dropped into a hot bath to add extra hydration to skin.

Eye Makeup Removal
I make my own eye makeup remover, but I usually use olive oil. I knew argan oil would be just as moisturizing for my lashes so I substituted argan olive in place of the olive oil. Argan oil is safe for use around the eye area and will condition your lashes.

Here is a short video on how to make your own eye makeup remover using Argan oil.

I met a Moroccan woman who told me that you could cook with argan oil, and though I’m sure you can, I don’t recommend cooking with your expensive bottle of argan oil 🙂

If you’re interested in trying it, Josie Maran is a great brand that is vegan, natural and organic. It is sold at Sephora and also incorporated into cleansing oils, balms and cosmetics. The cleansing oil is fantastic and the new Infinity Cream is an awesome product that can be mixed with colored pigments to create cream shadows and blushes as well as moisturize lips, hair, skin and nails.
