Could Bondi Sands Liquid Gold be the best yet?
If you’ve read my Best Self Tanners post, you’ll know that I’ve been on the hunt for the creme de la creme of self tanners for a while now. I’ve tried a lot, liked a few, hated a few.
It’s always something. If a self tanner’s color is good, the scent is awful. If the scent is pleasant, the color comes out streaky as hell. I mean, I basically have one question.
Who do I have to sell my soul to, to get back to my 2009 Mexican honeymoon self? Because I’ll do it. I’ll do it right now.
I’ve had previous success with Bondi Sands Self Tanning Foam and their Aero formula, but concluded that my very dry skin was still the main hurdle standing in the way of a perfected self tan. So, I decided to try one more Bondi product, Bondi Sands Liquid Gold Self Tanning Foam.
I chose this because it’s Bondi Sands’ most hydrating formula, due to the inclusion of Argan Oil. I also opted for this as it has the lightest color guard.
SCENT
True to all of the Bondi Sands products, Liquid Gold has a strong tropical coconut scent. I don’t mind it. All self tanners have that weird smell as they develop, but this wasn’t anything more potent than others.

APPLICATION
This set made application very easy. The thumb on the mitt really makes a difference! When applying an aerated foam formula like this, I put a few pumps onto my mitt, and then squeeze the mitt together to break down the bubbles. Then I use swiping motions and make sure to cover all my bases.
GUIDE COLOR
I always said if Bondi Sands made a clear formula, it would be nearly perfect. Liquid Gold Self Tanning Foam is the closest. It has a guide color that you see in the foam itself, but not so much on the skin once you rub it in. I don’t see this faint color transferring to clothing, bedding or furniture the way others can.
DRY TIME
Since Liquid Gold has Argan Oil, it’s not quite as quick drying as other Bondi Sands’ formulas. However, I would say the drying time was only extended by 5-10 minutes. I was able to dress in 20 minutes I’d say.
DEVELOPMENT TIME
As directed, I left this on for 6 hours, sleeping in it and showering in the morning. You don’t have to shower off a guide color, but due to that classic self tanner development smell, you’ll want to.

COLOR
Bondi Sands Liquid Gold Self Tanning Foam gave a light, flattering, golden tan that looked spot-on for my yellow undertone skin. I was super happy with the color.
WEAR
This wore well and evenly. I didn’t experience any scales, patches or streaks.
OVERALL THOUGHTS ON LIQUID GOLD
If you have dry skin, no matter the season, I highly recommend Bondi Sands Liquid Gold Self Tanning Foam.
I think it works best on lighter skin tones as you’re not going to get a super deep tan, the way you might with the other Bondi Sands products.
This is my favorite formula of the 3 Bondi Sands products I’ve tried, mainly due to the lack of messy guide color and the hydration.
For me personally, Bondi Sands Liquid Gold Self Tanning Foam is the most perfect self tanner for me.

06/06/2023 at 3:03 PMThis may be an old article, but Bondi DOES have a clear formula now… Been around since ’21. It’s Bondi Sands PURE foaming water. It’s a STAPLE in my life- I’m rarely seen without it.
